Re: Blichmann Hop Rocket

From the Blichman website: * The HopRocketâ„¢ can be utilized as a general strainer/filter but it is NOT intended to filter all the sediment and particles of your brew pot while using at a hopback. The large quantities of pellet hops, trub and other debris will plug and compact the hop bed stopping flow. The installation of a prefilter in your pot is recommended to prevent excessive quantities of material from entering the hopback. As such, recirculation whirlpool immersion chilling systems should not be utilized with the HopRocketâ„¢.

I'm considering one of these when I get my pump and start whilpool chilling ala JZ. Has anybody used this sucessfully while whirlpool recirculating?

I've used my hop rocket (with the original screen) a couple of times with rice hull's in stead of hops, and it works great. No trub gets through. I put the rice hull's in a hop sac per Tasty, and couldn't be happier with the result. Guess I need to send my old screen in for the upgrade now.

I would still like to hear from anybody who has used this sucessfully while whirlpool chiller recirculating? Also, does it in fact contribute more hop aroma than just whirlpooling hops without a hopback? I may want the wife to put one under the tree this year if it's worth the time any $$.

Blichmann recommends minimum 4 ft head for gravity fed operation, but anyone using this as a filter prior to plate chiller? I've read the majority of this thread, but I've yet to read anyone operating a Hop Rocket gravity fed through a plate chiller.

I imagine it will work fine until the filter cake thickness increases enough to stop flow.
