When corny kegs leak.

Wed Oct 21, 2009 5:41 pm

When I got home this afternoon the CO2 bottle was zeroed. So I was thinking; “Improvise, adapt, overcome” (Clint Eastwood, Heartbreak Ridge). This is one for the Boy Scout file.

This is pretty silly, but it works.

I have been fighting slow CO2 leaks lately. I found one by spraying StarSan and finding bubbles. There are two of my cornies that will lose their pressure very slowly (maybe overnight, a few hours on the other). I was losing 5lb bottles after a couple of weeks and I don't drink enough to warrant that much gas. I began shutting my gas off at night and when I would go to turn it back on I am finding the two trouble kegs aren't pressurized. I guess I need to leak test them by leaving them pressurized for a few days, maybe a week. If they hold then I can trust them.
Sometimes I admire the simplicity of a sanke keg...one seal to worry about.

Too true!

There's maybe 1/2 gallon left in that keg. I'm gonna pick up my CO2 tanks after work and beer gun some 12s so we can demo oxidation at the next meeting.

Yeah, for those that don't know, that will be an oxidized bomb after about a day.

Just don't want some unknowing new soldier thinking he can save money on his tap system.

It was the poppet. There's some black scale on the sealing face of the pin. The thing looks like plated brass, so I don't dare use nitric. I'm gonna hit it with metal polish and then dump it in the sonicator for 10 minutes and see if it'll clean up.

We use "Snoop" in the GC lab to check for gas leaks. Basically it's diluted soap in a squeeze bottle. I made my own using a empty windex bottle, water, and about a tsp of dish soap.

Maybe I'm lazy, but poppets run just $2.50 - $3.90 at the store I just checked.
Aging: Gotlandsdrickå, Baltic Porter in Bourbon barrel, Olde Ale #2 in whiskey barrel
On Draft: Nothing. Building a walk-in cooler right now.

My closest store is in either Austin, Tulsa, or St. Paul. It's gonna be a couple of days before I can drop by :D
