I've been brewing for 12 years and have never seen (or heard) of this actually happening.
And of course it had to happen at 4:30AM... What a friggin mess!

Oh man, and that's carpet too....
You must have had a bit of a fault or something going on with your carboy... was it a 6.5 gal acid carboy? if so, what a shame!
