Brew Kettle False Bottom: Remove After Every Brew?

I have a converted keg with a false bottom and was just curious if other people remove this after every brew to clean? This would mean unbolting, cleaning and rebolting with new teflon tape every time? Is this a normal procedure or do people just soak with PBW? Also, with the proteins and hop gunk that come up to the top of the keg, under the lip, is there a particular sponge that better or worse? Should I be staying away from yellow with the green bottom sponges?

I'm also curious of other people's cleaning procedures for other equipment after brewing...cooler mash tuns, etc.

I would say that removal is necessary. I have a false bottom setup from B3 on my mash tun. It has a compression fitting and an o-ring. I can untighten the nut without a wrench. You might want to try to figure out a better way to hook up the dip tube. Replacing teflon tape every time is a pain in the ass.

And as far as the yellow sponge with green scrubbie - too abrasive. Look for the blue ones with the white scrubbies.

I have a removable false bottom. Basically, on the inside of the kettle from the wall I have a 1/2 fitting that sprouts 1/2" diameter copper pipe extending a few inches. Then off of that I simply have a 2" piece of silicone tubing. Then off of that I have another 1/2" diameter copper pipe that then elbows down to the false bottom. It takes me half a second to take off the false bottom. I use this on my MT and BK. I did have to drill out my false bottom a ways to fit 1/2 inch tubing though. Eureka!

I have a converted keg with weldless fittings. I have three pieces of copper tubing in a 90 coming off the weldless fittign going though my stainless steel false bottom. I disassemble (1 ss clamp) and soak everything in PBW for 24 hours after brewing.

All times are UTC - 8 hours
