I finally broke down and replaced all my barbs with quick disconncects (it was an expensive proposition). I've heard that some people drill out the plastic cross bars inside the QD's. is this a good idea?

Yes, that is absolutely the way to go. I found that a dremel works best. Go slow, and you can even switch to a buffing wheel to remove any grind marks.

Not only is it a good idea, but it is essentially necessary.

Maybe, but the real reason to eliminate them is they clog very easily.

Buy a Dremil, it's worth the investment.
