Drying a Plate Chiller

Mon Mar 30, 2009 6:08 pm

Hi -

I have a Shirron Plate that I am very happy with. I generally run PBW through in both directions immediately after brewing...followed by running hot water through. I can hear that there is still water in there days after cleaning. How do you guys dry it? I have heard you can throw them in the oven for sanitizing and I expect that would dry it out pretty well but have not tried it.

Any tips are appreciated!

Your other option would be to blow some sort of compressed air through it to remove the remaining water, but that doesn't seem nearly as sanitary as baking it in the over

I use one too. I imagine the sticker which labels the ins and outs would melt or combust. Maybe if you put the oven on the lowest setting which would be under 200? I don't worry about it. Especially consifereing mine is mounted. I pump PBW and hot water backwards, followed by starsan. I store it outside, and have noticed some crud after leaving it outside for several months. So I make sure to clean before brewing as well.

Brandt, good point. I have seen many a plate chillers mounted which keeps them out of the oven. The sticker is what kept me from putting it in the oven in the first place. I actually follow the same methods: PBW, H2O, Stan Star after and before brewing.

Thanks for the input...

I don't worry about water left in my Shirron chiller. I put it in the oven @ 450F in the morning and don't bring it out until late in my boil. My paper stripped off long ago when I soaked it in star san. I let it sit around 10-15 minutes before the end of the boil and I drain a litre of wort through it and dump it. Backwashing after for an hour or so and let it drain as best as I can. I have been doing this for a couple of years now and everything seems to be okay so far.

Okay, here's a question: How do you guys mount your chiller (for those who do)? I'm getting ready to upgrade my stand. Currently I have it zip tied to a box which houses my pump. Going to build a stand for my electric kettle with mounts for the pump and chiller underneath. I would like to be able to remove it without wasting zip ties. Im thinking some sort of clamp which is a threaded rod with a wing nut on it. Looking for suggestions...
