So, I'm about to get $400 from winning a contest at work. I'm really thinking af getting a good brew kettle. I'm only doing 5 gallon batches so I'm wondering...40qt or 60qt?

I get about 20% evap rate and I am probably going to be doing more 90 minute boils than 60 (I like Pilsner bases).

Is 60qt overkill?

Also, is there any advantage to having a thermometer on a boil kettle?

60 is not overkill if you want to move to 10 gallon batches. Go for it.

I would never advocate anything less than a 60, for someone doing all grain. Sure you are doing 5 gallon batches now - but you might want to do 10 gallons. You have the option of either with that pot. I only brew 5 gallon batches when it's a special, high gravity or high alcohol beer that I want to age for a while. Most house beers are 10 G batches.
