I was wondering if this keg could be turned into a keggle. I was given a twenty year old keg fridge that had this in it.

That is the bung hole. (hehehehehe - I said "Bung hole").

Yes, it could be converted to a keggle. It probably belongs to the brewery, though, and as such, would constitute thievery.
Also, the sloped sides make for a non-uniform volume/depth measurement. Personally, I think you would be better off with a (legally purchased) sankey keg.

It would make a poor keggle because of it's shape and lack of handles. Plus there is a brewery somewhere that would really love to get it back. Try contacting your local breweries and tell them that you are looking for discarded kegs for homebrewing. Chances are you'll find one at little or no cost.

I got one of those a few months ago from a friend and I gave it to my welding friend to convert it to a kettle after finding out that it is a really old type of keg that no one uses anymore. The fittings for it are darn near impossible to find.

This keg is over 20 years old so I dont think they will set up road blocks to come and get me if I cut it up.
I weld stainless and have ready access to everything I would need for putting in a threaded collar, welding up that bung hole, and putting handles on it.
I was just wondering if there would be any problem because it is so old. This will get me by for now then one day, when I have some legit, nice, keggles I can give this one to somebody just getting started themselves.

Well I think you are missing the point. The keg is not your property, regardless if it is 20 years old or not. Some breweries still use those Hoff Stevens style kegs. This topic comes up quite a bit on all brewing forums.

budrockdiesel, Please don't feel like you are being ganged up on here. Every forum I read does the same thing when it comes to kegs. Even people who buy one from a distributor get picked on. That being said. I wouldn't think that keg would be that great for a kettle. One great thing about converted kegs in the handles.

Looks to me like you should turn it into a cask. Just pretend its a stainless steel oak barrel.
