If i'm assuming correctly after I pull the spear from a keg wouldn't it be just as hard to clean as a carboy?

yeah pretty much. a soak with pbw and it comes out clean. the advantage comes when sanitizing as you can easily heat sanitize (maybe even sterilize) a sanke with some distilled water and a burner.

good point pfooti... out of curiosity how many of you guys ferment in plastic buckets with great results? I used to do that back when I first started...way easier than carboys.

Of course you can ferment in a pot. There is not one reason why you can't.
Some brewers prefer flat bottoms and large top surface area.

Some old school monks brewed on open topped wooden square tanks.
(I've no clue what their product tasted like)

Very interesting topic. Has anyone heard about about installing electric heating elements in a conical? Would you put them above the slope or below? Any thoughts?

If I wanted to boil in the conical, I would put the heating element below the slope. Otherwise you're heating the top and not getting much mixing below. Come to think of it, I would do that even just for temp control in a fermenter.
