Re: pump for tasty/doc keg cleaner

I just got one that I hope is not too wimpy. 330 GPH fountain pump. It pumps water through my 25' chiller at a decent flow rate. I have not made my keg cleaner yet, so hopefully it will have enought push to move the water around.

I've got the exact same 1/6 hp pump but mine is from ACE. It works perfectly for both keg cleaning and pumping ice water (w/ salt) through my immersion chiller.

+1. The 330 gph pond pump worked pretty well as a keg cleaner. What is everyone's regiment for using these? 30 minutes cleaner, 5 min rinse water, 1 min starsan? That's what I did, although I just pushed the starsan through the tubes, then filled up the kegs a little with it, closed them, and rolled them around like I did before the keg cleaner.

Any tips / tricks? I did say fuckit and bought some oxyclean, rather than PBW. PBW is too damn expensive!

I have been running it for 30 minutes with the kegs - the black rubber at the base of the keg starts to come off after that amount of time (this might be why some folks have them upside down in their cleaners).

I take the keg off the pump and manually rinse the cleaned keg out with a warm water a couple of times. I do not use the Star-San rinse until right before I keg, but there usually is a keg or two of star san sitting around as this stuff lasts a long time if you keep it covered.

To make the PBW go a longer way I usally start off cleaning a carboy, then kegs and often will soak some other things in the base at the same time to extend the life of PBW. PBW is twice as expensive when you have to ship it in via airfreight.
