Re: Insulating a Stainless Steel Mash Tun

After I preheat my keggle Mash Tun, I just wrap it in a blue moving blanket double folded. I tie it tightly, and even when its' 35 in the geto garage, I only lose about 1-2 degrees.

It's a touch of a pain, but it's worth it because I can remove it for moving/cleaning.

I saw a set up where the mash tun was "rolled" in a sheet of foil backed blue Styrofoam insulation used in construction. There were slits made at about 3 inch intervals that didn’t go all the way through. This was then “wrapped” around the keg with the foil on the inside like making a wooden barrel and then a heavy strap cinched it tight. This way it can be easily taken off for cleaning. Anyone try this? I was thinking of making one. Figuring out the flat dimension to just meet at the diameter on the wrap could be tricky.

I suppose you could also wrap some cheap open cell foam around it, and then an "ace bandage" of fiberglass cloth. Paint on a little resin. Then you could then slice it off with a dremel. The fiberglass would be flexible enough to allow you to spread the whole thing slightly to get it on and off the tun for cleaning.

You might not even need to insulate it depending on how long your mash will be. I have the 10 gallon Boilermaker and when I was recording the vessel heat loss for Beer Tools Pro it only lost 2ºF over 65 minutes sitting on my countertop.

If you want to calculate your wood barrel, go to download dot com and search for Cone Layout.

You can put in a cylinder and then how many staves you want and it will tell you how wide they need to be and angle of incidence.

I use it all the time to make 3D stuff out of 2D material (wood or metal)

And when you put stuff together, it probably fits the first time. Where's the fun in that?

I used to wrap my sanke mash tun with a cheap closed cell foam sleeping mat for camping that I bought from Wal-Mart years ago. I cut it to the right length and then used a couple of bungee cords to hold it on. I would then use another thick piece of insulation (another sleeping mat) for the lid. It would only lose a couple of degrees over an hour when I used the lid. I took off the insulation every time to wash the keg.

Look for something called Armaflex. Can be had in various sizes. It's supposed to be waterproof. I've never used it myself, but have seen it on several brew systems.
