Can you use a window a/c unit to cool chilling water?

Thu Jul 23, 2009 10:15 am

Crazy thought - would it be possible to rig up a window a/c unit to your chilling water(using the pond pump technique) and keep it cold instead of using ice? It's not safe to let me work on electrical appliances, but I'm wondering if anyone else has tried it.

Occam's razor or Ockham's razor.

I'm with you on simplicity being the best course, but I think some folks have water sources that are just far too warm for proper chilling.
I hope my post helped in some way. If not, please feel free to contact me.

The Pope is right. It's been over 100F almost every day for the past month(we had a few days of 95F). My groundwater is usually around 80F when I'm chilling, so getting down to 44F to pitch a lager takes.... well, I'm not sure how long it takes because I usually give up and let it cool in the freezer overnight before pitching. Whirlpool chilling helps an awful lot, but it still requires a lot of ice to get my water cold enough, so I'm wondering if there's a way to avoid that part. Otherwise, I'm all for the simplest thing that works!

No, but will work on it. I have a friend in the Portland Water Bureau.
