The bar pushes a pin in it's mating female part which is part of an internal safety valve that will shut off the gas flow if the QD is detached during gas flow while the main shutoff is open. Safety is intregal to the design of any gas system. Not all QD's are interchangeable. If you purchased the Char-broil thow it back in the box, take it back, get your moneyback, and buy what works, before your part of a huge fireball...BYE ~gk
P.S. Flow direction is marked so that the QD engineered safety shut design off will function to protect you. As you extend from the source of the gas you always need a male connector on your appliance to plug into a female socket on the end of your line. The safety mechanism is built into the Female Socket. This is why the cost of the female socket is much higher than the mating male part.
