Does anyone know whether you can mount the therminator vertically? Or must it be kept horizontal as the face plate suggests?

Well, you can build a mounting clamp with some steel or alum plate .

It comes with a mounting bracket, but that doesn't mean you have to mount it one way or another.

I had the same question, I think a lot of people mount it vertcally and it works just fine.

I plan on mounting mine on a hinged shelf so it will swing out of the way, this will solve the problem of which way to mount it.
I will also use butterfly nuts to easily remove it.

I'm sure someone around here has a better answer though, I've only had mine for a few months.

Sounds like a plan. I bet the position is intended to eliminate the possibility of an air bubble getting trapped. Any air would equal some space in the HEX that would be unavailable for thermal transfer is all.
I rather suspect that any bubble you might get would be inconsequential.
