Dogfish Head Burton Baton

I just enjoyed my second Burton Baton from Dogfish Head. Its an oak aged imperial IPA. Superbly balanced malt and hops. Complex and deep flavors. I'd love to have 5 gallons in my kegerator. Can you brew it?

P.S. Burton Baton is a really fine beer if you can find it.

Although I agree that Burton Baton is a fine beer, Very fine and I enjoy it very much, I was asked the same question by a less experienced member of my homebrew club and I'll tell you the same thing that I told him. If you like Burton Baton it is probably just be easier to go ahead and buy it rather than trying to clone it. Being a blend of beers aged different lengths of time this would be a very ambitious project for any homebrewer to take on. Now maybe the DFH 90 min IPA would be a great CYBI choice but as much as I prefer the BB to 90 min; I am going to keep buying it as opposed to brewing an old ale, aging it in oak, brewing a IIPA then blending back once both have aged the right amount. It seems that they have chosen, other than the Jolly Pumpkin stuff, to clone beers that are pretty straight forward. I loved Firestone Walker 13 but clone that I think not.

I tried to brew it, but not by blending, but by fermenting the 5 gallons of a 90 minute clone with 4oz medium toast french oak. It was not as smooth as DFHBB but I sure liked it and the damn keg blew pretty quickly too!
When I brew it again I plan on maintaining the oak in the fermenter then aging the beer on oak for a couple months. Give it a shot and see what happens. This is the great thing about home brewing after all!!

That's what I'm sayin'. Give it a shot and let us know how it goes. Do I think the guys on the show will try that?? Oh.. HELL no. That is a complex beer to try to clone for a radio show. That's a tough one, but that shouldn't stop you from trying. I did something like that... just started with a IIPA and oaked it - just to see. Wasn't even close, but it was a start and it gave me some options on what to do next time.
