Call in volume

I have heard this a few times over the months. I was listening to the post-GABF show today while driving home from a football game. The in studio volume levels were fine, except Beevo. The call in from the super brewer long shot winner was light, however. I sucked it up and turned up the volume, which mean the in studio crew was too loud. About halfway through things got a little better, but there was still a difference.

I don't know radio, so I am not sure what a fix might be. Is there a knob you can turn up for a phone line in only? Maybe a meter of some kind to look at the volume coming into the equipment?

Justin has meters on every channel during the show - but unless he archives it as a multi-track recording, he can't go in post-production and boost one channel over any others. At that point the mix is fixed. I imagine there must have been something wrong with the phone connection and Justin did his best at the time.

The phones can be tough to deal with at times.

Basically, we have the base model of the equipment needed to moderate phone volume for broadcast quality and we do what we can with it. The next step up in equipment to handle phones better is in the $5000+ range so we just make due :)

Sorry for the level difference at times. If it makes you feel any better it drives me fucking nuts too :)

I think there are these dog tags on the main page people should probably start clicking on and following the directions. Just sayin.

Can I blame my crappy connections on Justin as well?

True, but the REAL next step up is a full-time board op... like... I don't know... can I do it? Me? Please! Shit... I'm going to go hold myself in the corner and think of all of you dying slowly in scalding peanut butter.

Love,

I don't know about specific standards you may or may not have to adhere to (and the specific gear you may have and that gear's capabilities), but you could route the phone line channel(s) through a compressor/expander. It'll bring the lower end of the db meter up towards a more useable level and it'll soften the spikes on the upper end of the meter so you don't have to worry so much about clipping/distorting your signal. You'll have to worry a little about the expander creating/accentuating existing noise and possibly creating a pumping sound but I guess I'd rather have some noise and audible phone calls (you can control the pumping sound with longer "decay" settings) instead of mostly noiseless signal with inaudibly quiet phone calls.

Of course, maybe you already have some sort of expander/compressor set up and it's just not working in the manner you'd like.

If you don't have one, you could pick one up for not a whole hell of a lot - a couple hundred for a decently capable unit.

It's great because you won't have to hire some crazy guy to screw up your board but works nearly as well.

Or maybe your equipment won't allow you to integrate one of these and I'm just a bastard holding the Golden Apple of Phone Line Audio Control just out of your reach.

Ya know, he seems like such a nice, normal, balanced guy until he whips out with something like that.
