best hops to grow in the SF Bay Area?

Tue Feb 23, 2010 10:38 pm

hi all,

I apologize if this question has been raised in this forum already, but i'm having trouble figuring out how to search this site.

anyway, i was wondering if folks knew what are good hop varieties to grow in the SF bay area. Specifically, I live in Oakland and will be a first time grower. I'd most likely be growing in a larger container (or half-wine barrel as I have seen recommended on this site.)

from what i've read, it also seems like most recommend that first-time growers focus on growing aromatic hops or hops for dry-hopping.

thanks.

I would say Cascade is the failsafe for growing. I have had mine in a large pot and i couldn't contain the growth for two harvests in SF. I live in a strange "micro-climate" but all they need is a good 8 hours in the sun.
I tried ekg but it never flowered but i think it will this year.

This is from the first year.
