I had an extra liter of wort from my mash last Sunday that I boiled, cooled then xfrd into a sanitized plastic container and put into the fridge. So this was a bad idea and I should NOT use this for my next starter?

There will probably be a low bacterial load in this wort.

If your sanitation is very good, you might use it IF it's within a few days (maybe 2?).

What I do with small volumes like that is freeze it, then reboil it at the time of using it for a starter.

The alternative is to pressure can it to steralize it - then you're good to go for a starter as is.

I had not planned to use it right away, but I did plan to boil it again just like I would DME for a starter. It's now been 4 days in the fridge, I could throw it in the freezer and use it later?

Just putting this out there, is there any use for pressure cooking for preserving fresh picked hops? I have a food dehydrator, but I am curious about what pressure cooking would do to a jar filled with fresh or dried hops.

Would that vaporize the oils? Would they still attach to the hops? Would the hops just turn into mush? Could you keep it in a certain quantity of water and get bitterness out of it to be added sometime in the boil? Weird.

Just trying to imagine what would take place.

you would completely fuck up your hops... in a very bad way.
Just freeze them.
Heat and hops are bad things

That's no fun, but I guess with the hops situation being so screwed, I prolly should just go with the flow and not fuck up any hops.

You pooped on my parade. Asshat.

I'm still wondering what exactly would happen to the wilted hops and vaporized acids. I guess I will never know. Maybe tannins and crap from the vegetal matter.

So next time you are canning up some starter wort or whatever throw a jar of hops in there and see what you get! It is (or should be) the homebrewers way to question things and discover through experimentation.

Just make sure to take pictures, write down your observations, and post it!

Anybody have an idea on what would cause the weight to just blast off instead of jiggling around?

Is it just due to me having the heat jacked up too high?
