What's a Reasoanble Amount of Trub?

How much trub do you end up with in your boil kettle? I end up with 1.5 gallons, so I alter all my recipes to make 6.5 gallons. What volume of trub do you get? I use the two plastic bucket method from my lauter tun. I am thinking that the 1/8 inch holes are too large and causes the excess trub. I do vorlauf or what ever it's called when you take the first runnings and pour it back in the lauter tun.

I think you get trub from the boil, or am I wrong? I usually have about .75 gallons in a six gallon batch...

Are you getting actual grain particulate matter in your kettle?

And yes, you should be vorlaufing to set your grain bed.

The trub is very fine and looks like a thick uniform layer of fog on the bottom of the tank. I don't really see any grain particulates. Could this be from too fine milling?

Are you using hop pellets? They will look like that at the end of the boil. If you use at least some leaf hops, They will filter out a lot of that when you siphon so you leave a lot less wort in the kettle.

I get the same sort of trub at the bottom. It seems like a mix of hot/cold break and pellet hops. I do the same thing and just plan to leave 1.5gal behind just to avoid waiting for it to settle more. I need to get a diverter plate when I upgrade to my next kettle.

Yes, I use hop pellets almost exclusively. Does the diverter plate really work? The logic of it is appealing which usually means with me that it doesn't work very well :-) Ofcourse, the plate would have to be high enough such that the fog of trub didn't roll over the sides after it settled to uniform hight after whirlpooling. Do you use a hop bag with the whole hops? I can see that effectively reducing the amount of trub.

I get just the same thing using pellets. and there is about 3.5 litres left in my kettle that I cant use. I've been thinking about boiling my hops in a hop bag to try and reduce it a little.
