Kolsch ideas for Winner Takes All Comp

Fri Sep 16, 2016 3:24 pm

I just read about a competition in my area that's happening and I want to enter. It's a weird format though. There are no categories and the only award is for best in show. I don't expect many guys in my LHC to enter because of the weird format. I have about a keg and a half of Kolsch on hand (kegged and carbed for 7 weeks) only and no time to get anything brewed before cut off. I am very happy with the Kolsch, it's very clean and I detect zero flaws, but I don't know if that would be enough on it's own to be that memorable to people who I am pretty sure aren't serious beer judges. I am thinking about trying to tweak the second keg... maybe dry hop it with some Mosaic, and entering both the normal and the tweaked. Any suggestions? Is it too late to dry hop?

Dry hopping it is a good idea. Could you hit it with something else that doesn't need fermenting? A buddy of mine did a coffee kolsch (believe it or not). The color was still light yet you could definitely taste and smell the coffee. I think that he "dry beaned" it. I can get you his email if you want. It was an excellent beer.

Email sent.

BTW, they (he - he was asst. brewer) used to make his Coffee Kolsch on the pilot system at the brewery he worked for. It was a nice, interesting beer and sold quite well in the pub.

Yeah, I was immediately leaning towards extract additions. If you check out Olive Nation extracts (sold by Silver Cloud) you will fine a huge selection of very high grade natural extracts (made specifically for the baking and beverage industries). They are VERY potent and most do not come across as "fake" like other extracts can. They even have some interesting blends that are all ready for use (think pina colada....).

Just some thoughts for you.

You get no change for that one. The visual alone will haunt me for the rest of my life!
