Bulk grain containers

Sun Aug 31, 2014 9:14 pm

I am thinking about moving up to bulk grain but I am not sure what I should get to store my grain. What do you guys store your bulk grain in? Does the container need to be air tight or does it matter to much about what I use? Post your pics of your storage areas.

Maybe not air tight but bug and mouse tight is nice.

I use pet food containers from costco and/or cheap buckets from the hardware store. The pet food containers hold 50+ of grain, and have a seal on them.

I use the clear sterilite containers you can get at target or walmart, but I added a strip of foam weatherstripping tape around the edge to get a reasonably air-tight seal. Cheap and effective.

Those are all good options.
Another option is to use the same buckets that you would use as a fermenter. You can usually get them cheap with lids at your LHBS and before they put drill holes in them.

I use buckets with a rubber seal in the lid. I can get 3-4 of those for the price of one bucket from a brew shop.

I use brute 20 gallon trash cans for base malt. They hold a full sack plus a bunch. For other grains I use the clear snap lid bins like grannies use for sewing. All of these I use foam weather stripping to keep critters out. All of this is stored in my non climate controlled shop, aka brewery

So I assume the main issue is to keep critters out? I don't need to worry about heat or moisture? I was planning on keeping it in my garage and the Texas heat gets pretty high down here.
