First all grain batch.....

Tue Oct 25, 2011 11:06 am

:? Ok 2 week's ago I did my first all grain batch,,,, And yes I fucked up the sparge calculations. I only colected 5 gallons to the kettle not 6. and the OG came out like 20 points to low because I had to fill the fermenter with water. I now have a calcbrated stick, and through the counlseing of two members in my local club have figured out I had my head up my ass. Oh well it's gona make beer and I'm chalking this one up to a character building.... and being an F-tard.

I did my first all grain batch on new years day. I screwed up my water treatment and the beer was salty. I poured half of it out and saved half to cook with. Tasted it each time I cooked and it's way better now than it was 10 mos ago, but only one bottle left. I may end up drinkin the last one. I've learned something with every AG batch I've done since and the've gotten increasingly better. The last 4 batches have been the best I've ever made. Just like me, with the help of the BNA, you're gonna be making some great beer soon. :jnj

You will learn pretty quickly that beer is pretty forgiving when you make a simple mistake (other than sanitation). The biggest way people really mess up a beer is when they try to adjust a recipe or process to deal with a problem they don't even have. If your basic process and recipe is good, you will turn out good (maybe not prize winning) beer even with mistakes like yours.

Ok I figured out what I screwed up,,,, FML/// I was trying to save some space for my all grain system and use two 7.5 gallon keggles. One for the HLT, and one for the boil kettle. there is just no f-ing way to collect more than 6 gallons and not have the damn thing boil over. I guess you live you learn. I have since upgraded to the 1/2 barrel keggles and have a three tier gravity stand built and ready for me(just as soon as my buddy get's his new stand built. This way I can do either 5 or 10 gallon batches. :asshat:

That's great brotha. Just remember that Ferm Cap, or some other anti foam agent is a great help for boils, as well as for starters and fermentations :jnj
