VittleVaults

Thu Apr 07, 2011 10:02 am

I just bought four VittleVaults from PetMountain the other day. Two original VittleVaults and two VVII, which are a little smaller in capacity. The VVII will just hold a 50lb bag of two row malt. Both are air tight and pest proof/resistant. They have free shipping and the containers are about 50% off if your interested in purchasing in bulk, you might want to check out their website. :aaron

Have one too. They work great.

My wife got it for me for Christmas and had it sent to the neighbors house so I wouldn't see it. They were wondering what the hell it was for since we don't have pets...just a kid. Hmmm...bulk child food, now there's an idea.

I wasn't sure the VVII would hold a 50lb bag, it just holds it. I like the clear plastic of the VVII over the original. Both are great. Now I have to get a better scale. LOL... always something to add to the brewery.

Homebrewfinds.com had this list a while back. I have it but haven't taken it out of the box yet. Hopefully tonight to prep for brewday tomorrow.

I have been using 5 gallon buckets with gasket seal lids which have proven to be cheap, effective, and stackable .... but I did just see the 60lb vittle vault containers at Costco for $25.99. I like the idea of being able to stack them and have access to the grains in the bottom container. The price is at least a little more palatable than the usual $50 price tag I have seen.

Just thought I'd pass that along for those that are interested in the product ... hopefully your local Costco has them in stock also.

I can't say enough in praise of the Vittles Vaults. I actually bought my first one for dog food. As I was putting it in the back if the truck the light came on and I went back into the store and bought them out. I had a multi year hiatus in brewing (it wasn't supposed to be that long but that's another story) and when I was finally able to heat water again remembered some 4 y/o malt in a Vittles Vault in the basement. It still smelled fresh and sweet and converted though I didn't dare make beer with it.

I particularly like the newer ones that have the lid on the side. You can stack several vertically and get grain out of any of them without having to unstack as you do with the original design. If there is too much weight in upper ones then this can distort the roundness of the opening in the lower ones making it difficult to get the lid screwed back in. The other complaint I have is that you can't buy a replacement O-ring (not from the manufacturer anyway - I suppose you could go to an O-ring supplier). Other than that they are about as valuable as your thermometer and hydrometer IMO.

The VVII, is a little lighter clear plastic so you can see how much grain there is. They're not really stackable, but it's nice to see how much grain you have at a glance. I'm not sure where just yet I'm going to store it all. I'm either going to take over a corner of my garage or take over my old hay barn that is roughly 9X15. Decisions, decisions....I'll have to have a beer on that one. :aaron
