rice hulls

Tue Nov 18, 2008 4:06 pm

I was wondering how much to use.
I'm using a 10 gallon Gott type cooler with a ss false bottom. I've got my crush down to where I'm getting around 77% efficiency, but I'm getting really really slow run off if it doesn't get stuck. Is there some kind of % per pound of grain or should I open my crush some more and just add more grains?

I've always been told to use the same volume of rice hulls as huskless grain. So 1lb. of rice hulls takes the same volume as 5lb. of grain, roughly.

I use rice hulls quite often, probably more often than I actually need to. However I have never bothered to figure out the weight or % to use. I have also adjusted my mill to the point that I start to get slow run off. Once I hit that point, I began tossing in a couple handfuls of rice hulls and the run off is fine. If I am using a lot of wheat or rye, I then double what I normally use. Can't be much more helpful than that. I just do it by feel and by experience.

i use them every batch. just chuck about 1/2 a pound or so. it will do nothing but help and i don't think you can use too much. just remember, they will soak up some water so have a little extra sparge water around.

I'm like Bug. I grab a bigass handful or 2 and that is usually fine.

I was told that they don't have tannins so you don't even have to worry about that like you have to with barley husks.
