I'm curious, what type of MLT are you using that would allow 3 gallons of foundation below the grains? If it is the 2 bucket system I would cut off the bottom of the first bucket (about 2 inches from the bottom) and invert it into the second bucket to reduce the volume. Perhaps even notching out the space for the drain spigot...
