I dont think you need to use the whole yeast cake. I think that taking some out and rinsing it with some sanitized water. You can be leaving some dead cells in there that can break down and give you some horrible flavors.

I use Dawson's method for doing a quick yeast wash. Brewing TV was my biggest inspiration to start homebrewing, the brewing network episode brought me here, and taught me so much more on getting good beer consistently.
