Hey all-
I've been listening to the archived podcasts for a bit, and just heard my first live show on Sunday. I love beer, and wanted to get into brewing, but I know nothing about it. I was wondering if anyone could point me to a good resource for starting out with brewing. For example, I went to the Beer, Beer and More Beer website and they have a starter kit. What else do I need beyond this? Is this a good way to start? Any replies would be greatly appreciated!

Schedule a visit to your local homebrew store and have a chat with a knowledgable associate. In my experience they have always been more than happy to help discuss what you need, what you could use, and what you don't need but will want someday. They aren't usually pushy or try to upsell you... they know that once you get into the hobby, you will do that yourself!

I started off with a basic kit from a homebrew store and it worked just fine.

Same here Tsrah...we started with a medium basic kit from www.morebeer.com and just brewed one of their pre-designed recipes...As you go you will figure out more details, problems, questions and so on...The thing that really really helps is to brew a lot and really try to compare things. Always make good notes, so you can go back and see what you actually did right/wrong.

I know that the guys from B3 are more than happy to help a brew-newbie with good information...

Also, please do never hesitate to ask your questions in the chat room during the shows. The guys are going to be of great assitance to you. And last, if you have a problem, just send us an email. We have the contact emails posted on our website.

Happy you decided to get into the hobby...I am sure you will love it...

Thanks a lot Daniela! Just a quick question about the Beer, Beer and More Beer starter kit if you don't mind. Do I need anything beyond the starter kit? I read on the info about the starter kit that it's five gallons.. will I need some bottles and cap? Thanks again for the help

Well, my name isn't Daniela (but sometimes when I'm alone I like to pretend it is, but that's neither here nor there) I bought a kit from another online vendor and it had everything I needed except a brew pot and bottles. Post the link or an item number of the item you're looking at getting and we'll tell ya if you need anything else. Most of the preconfiged kits I've bought come with 50 or so bottle caps so all you SHOULD need is the starter kit, enough bottles for 5gallons (~50 12oz or so) and a 5 gallon "stock" pot. You can pick up the pots at wal-mart for about $20 or less.

I didn't see any mention of bottles or a pot in there, so I'd imagine I'd have get those seperately.

If you can make to So Cal you're welcome to brew with Sven and me anytime. It's always easier when you've seen someone else do it.
