So I managed to pick up a 1/2 barrel keg recently and I plan on converting it to a boil kettle. What can I do with the spear. Have any of you ever used or did it get recycled?

It is very heavy on one end, other than hitting some one in the squash, I can't think of another use. That might have more to do with the three kolsch's I have had though.

Well, I can picture this on an episode of Bones... that would be a blunt force object they wouldn't be expecting....

Cut it off. Weld it to the top that was cut off for a handle and put a few washers around the edge and you have a nice lid.
