80 years

Tue Dec 03, 2013 5:14 pm

For those who don't have this marked on their calendar as I do every year, this Thursday is the 80th anniversary of the ratification of the 21st Amendment, ending the nearly 13 year long prohibition of alcohol in the US.

A brief timeline (yes, I know a lot of you are too lazy to look it up or remember the details ):

December 18, 1917 - US Senate proposes the 18th Amendment
January 16, 1919 - Approved by 36 states, the 18th Amendment was ratified
October 28, 1919 - The US Congress passes the Volstead Act, over President Woodrow Wilson's veto
January 17, 1920 - The United States goes dry
1920-1933 - All hell breaks loose
December 5, 1933 - Ratification of the 21st Amendment under President FDR by 36 states.

Unfortunately I won't be able to brew my annual Flanders Red this year, but I'll be pulling some bottles out of the cellar in celebration. Anyone have any Repealiation Day plans, other than joining me in a toast to better judgement?

My plans only include about a 13 hour work day. But I will definitely be ending the day with a couple of libations!!

Connecticut and Rhode Island were the only 2 states to reject the 18th ammendment. Hooray for New England ( well, at least some of them ).

Happy Repealiation Day! Waiting to head down to the post office in a few minutes, couple small things to do in the shop to set up for tomorrow (because I'm taking the rest of this 'holiday' off) & then I believe I will start off with a 2009 Fullers Vintage Ale, bottle #138989 of 160000. It's English, but judging from other vintages I've had, it's time to crack this one open. It's been in cold storage since I bought it in Denver in 2009.
