LME and DME

If a recipe calles for 6lbs of LME but the shop i use only have DME is it a one to one ratio or is there a formula like 6lbs of LME = 7 lbs of DME.

3lbs of LME = 4 lbs of DME

What is it about the liquid process that makes it less overall than the dry? Water content?

yes, it's the water content.

Generally, most LME yields 36 points per pound per gallon (pppg). In other words, if you add 1 lb of it to 1 gallon of water, you'll get a wort of 1.036.

DME (usually) yields 44 pppg.

36/44 = .81818181818 => use ~82% of the weight when converting LME to DME.
44/36 = 1.2222222222 => use ~122% of the weight when converting DME to LME.

(a little easier on the math is .80 vs 1.25)
